Jade, who ran the 60m, 100m and 200m, in high school, is a two-time state champion and two-time national champion high school runner in Michigan. Jada ran the 60m, 200m and 400m in high school and still holds several track records at Canton High, along with her sister.
The twins, who first became interested in the sport in middle school, running on the cross-country team, have continued to build on their success in college, after receiving track scholarships to attend the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff.
During her first two years at the Arkansas HBCU, Jade earned a best 60m time of 7.78 at Arkansas Invitational, a best 200m time of 25.06 at SWAC Indoor T&F Championship and a best 400m time of 58.59 at SWAC Indoor T&F Championship, as a member of the University of Arkansas Pine Buff track team. Jada has been heating up the college track as well, earning a best 600Y time of 1:30.91 at KSU DeLoss Dodds Invitational, best 400m time of 57.05 at KSU DeLoss Dodds Invitational, best 200m time of 25.54 at 5th Annual Indoor Gorilla Classic, during her first two years at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff.
The Sabir twins, who now attend the historic Prairie View A&M University, are both driven by the spirit of competition, which they say has had a major impact in how they approach life.
“Running has really pushed us to go harder,” explains Jada. “It’s a lot like life, because when you find yourself challenged or falling behind in a race, there’s something inside that makes you don’t want to give up. It teaches you to push yourself, to do your best.”
“You might not get something right the first time, but you identify the problem in life and say, ‘okay, I know how to go about that.’ I might have messed up here, but I can fix it, so it doesn’t happen again, and that how it is in track.”
That spirit of tenacity to win on and off the track, which has helped fuel the sisters’ success in the sport, even makes for a friendly family rivalry when they compete against each other.
It’s funny, because sometimes I actually find myself doing a double take, because it’s like seeing yourself run, but you know it’s not you,” says Jade.
Added Jada, “We know, that usually, one of us is going to come in first, and one of us is going to come in second. It’s usually Jade, trying to be competitive with me that starts it all,” says Jada, smiling. “And I’m like, ‘okay, we’ll see, after we finish this race.”
The Sabir twins credit a lot of their success in track to MTE Enterprise founder, Coach Thomas, who has trained the sisters, with his AAU track team, The People’s Choice Track Club, since they were 14 years old.
“Coach Thomas has helped us with so many things in track and field and in life,” says Jada. “That’s where we learned the importance of having a vision. He taught us how to apply that to running and everything else we want to do in life.”
Added Jade, “When you hear us talk about, ‘hitting our gears, and seeing ourselves crossing the finish line first,’ we learned all of that from Coach Thomas.”
Eager to up their level of competition, Jada and Jade are now looking forward to beginning the next chapter of their track and field career at Prairie View A&M, with bigger visions of running professionally in the Olympics.
Coach Thomas, one of the Sabir twins’ biggest fans, says he is excited for the world to finally see what he has always seen in the Jade and Jada.
“Jada and Jade are amazing competitors and more amazing human beings,” said Thomas. “They are a joy to coach and watch compete, and I know the best is yet to come, with all that they will achieve on and off the track.”
